This seems to the a song that is catching on in the UK. British Airways is launching a new route from Gatwick with the start of service to Las Vegas from October 29th this year. The three-times-a-week service will be operated by a three-cabin 777. Together with Heathrow service, British Airways will operate ten flights per week to Las Vegas. Colm Lacy, British Airways’ head of commercial Gatwick, said: “Las Vegas has proved to be an incredibly popular year-round destination from Heathrow so we are delighted to now be able to offer the route from Gatwick as well.”
Maybe a get away to Las Vegas offers respite from Euroland? As the Euro loses value, a visit to Vegas is going to be expensive.

It’s swim season and no doubt that pool pump is already running 8 to 10 hours a day to keep the pool sparkling clean. It’s normally the second biggest power hog around your home during the summer, so it can be an expensive recreation. But changing out the pump to a variable speed version could save a lot of energy and cash!
Right now, NV Energy is offering $200 rebates on variable speed models that can manage your pool more efficiently by performing tasks at different speeds during the day. They are programmable, so you dial in the amount of power needed to clean, circulate or filter your pool water, which don’t all need full power while your pump is running. David Lugo, NV Energy’s pool pump rebate program manager, says the newer technology with the variable speed pumps saves you 30% right out of the box! Then after it’s installed and starts working in synergy with your pool’s needs, the savings multiply.
Lugo says life extension studies on variable speed pumps stopped at 15 years, so there’s proof that they last longer than single-speed pumps. They work smarter to save wear and tear on your other pool equipment, too. And maybe the best bonus – they’re super quiet! Like hybrid vehicles, they use something called, “permanent magnets” technology.
You must be an NV Energy customer and have the pool pump installed at an NV Energy property to qualify for the rebate. Check the list of retailers and installers on NV Energy’s website. You can call the customer service number for advice and to make an appointment to have the pump calibrated so it’s working at optimum savings for your pool this summer!

Since then Las Vegas visitor traffic has recovered.
From the Las Vegas Sun: Visitor volume continues steady climb, latest numbers show
Las Vegas visitor volume continued to climb in March despite a drop in convention attendance, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported Thursday.
The LVCVA said 3.5 million tourists visited the city in March, a 3.7 percent increase over March 2011. For the first quarter, visitor volume is up 3.6 percent over last year to 9.8 million, just under the pace needed to record an unprecedented 40 million visitors.
Convention attendance was down 3.9 percent to 513,010 … Convention attendance was down despite a 34.6 percent increase in the number of conferences and meetings held (2,302).
It looks like visitor traffic will set a record this year, but convention attendance is still way below.

This blog is an alleged expert about all-things-Vegas, yet, inexplicably, we’d never heard of the “Les Clefs d’Or” honor until one was presented to Jas Vitale, a concierge at Caesars Palace.
Jas (pronounced “jazz”) Vitale was given the prestigious Les Clefs d’Or (French for “the keys of gold”) award after a rigorous series of tests and interviews confirming Vitale meets an elite standard of knowledge and service.

Jas makes things happen at Caesars Palace.
Les Clefs d’Or, by the way, is pronounced “lay clay door.” The Les Clefs d’Or designation is given by a concierge organization of the same name. Which we also didn’t know existed. This blog really needs to get out more.
We stopped by Caesars Palace to meet Vitale and to ask him about his favorite Vegas concierge hook-up of all time.
Vitale says, “Last year, I helped the Princess of Saudi Arabia. She was staying at another hotel at the time, but wanted to meet Celine Dion. She’d tried everything, and 35 minutes after I heard about it, she was all set with a meet-and-greet. I heard later the princess had tears in her eyes when they met. And I got to tell my six-year-old daughter I’d helped a real princess.”

Les Clefs d’Or recipients are easy to spot by these sweet gold key pin thingys.
“For a concierge, ‘no’ is not an answer,” says Vitale. Just another reason to love Las Vegas (and Caesars Palace), baby!
In April, Caesars Palace hosted the 2012 Pan American Congress of Les Clefs d’Or which drew about 500 attendees from across the U.S. and around the world. Caesars Palace now has five Les Clefs d’Or concierges on its staff.

Vietnam is emerging as the latest Asian nation to loosen a straight-laced attitude to gambling, with the Finance Ministry saying it plans to legalize sports betting.
U.S. casino operators view Asia as
an important new growth market
Photo: Mike Jack
The move, partly inspired by Singapore’s success in reinventing itself as a casino hub in recent years, followed discussions about easing restrictions on gambling in other major markets, such as Japan, and underscored the speed with which the gambling world’s center of gravity has shifted toward Asia.
Hanoi’s Finance Ministry said Monday that legalizing and regulating betting on soccer matches and other sporting events would help limit the social damage caused by underground gambling syndicates. While Vietnam has only a handful of casinos, which only foreign-passport holders can enter, informal gambling on European soccer matches is widespread. Many Vietnamese also regularly cross the border to gamble at Cambodian casinos, a practice that Vietnam’s Communist leaders long have viewed with distaste.
The recent success of the gambling industry in Singapore appears to be changing perceptions. Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s Marina Bay Sands and Genting Singapore PLC’s Resorts World Sentosa opened in Singapore in 2010 after the government auctioned off licenses to operate in the wealthy city-state. The auction followed years of hesitation about the possible social impact of casinos. But the casinos have been a financial success, drawing large numbers of tourists without triggering widespread crime or other problems.
Singapore’s success in creating family-oriented resorts has piqued the interest of investors and governments hoping to replicate that model in other parts of Southeast Asia.
Vietnamese Finance Minister Vuong Dinh Hue visited Singapore to study how sports betting works there. The ministry said he met with executives from the Tote Board and Singapore Pools, government-run operators of sports betting in Singapore. Mr. Hue also visited a horse-racing track.
On his return to Vietnam, Mr. Hue said his country could learn from Singapore’s example in setting up a legal and organizational framework for operating large-scale betting operations.
The Finance Ministry said it would draft legislation to submit to the prime minister for approval but didn’t provide a time frame.
It was unclear whether Mr. Hue’s more tolerant approach to sports betting signaled a broader shift among the country’s top leadership in Vietnam to open its market to more casinos and other forms of gambling.
It also was unclear if private companies, including foreign investors, would be allowed into the sports-betting market, or if the business would be dominated by the Vietnamese government.
Government officials couldn’t be reached.
U.S. casino operators view Asia as an important new growth market as their American operations continue to suffer the effects of the 2008 financial crisis. PricewaterhouseCoopers expects Asia to contribute 43% of the global casino market by 2015, up from 29% in 2010.
Vietnam could be one of several new gambling hubs, thanks to its population of around 90 million people and its growing appeal among foreign tourists. Las Vegas Sands Chief Executive Sheldon Adelson has said he was trying to encourage Vietnamese authorities to allow the company to build integrated casino-and-convention resorts in the country.
Other countries also appear to have been impressed by Singapore’s success.
A group of Japanese lawmakers are discussing plans to submit a bill that would pave the way for casinos to open in the world’s third-largest economy.
The Philippines also plans to use the gambling industry as a way to attract more tourists.

That’s it. It’s done. Over. Finished. After 17 rounds of pure excitement, carnage, and trips all across the United States and Canada, the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series came to a close inside the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although there wasn’t a title chase for any class coming into the final round, the stadium played host to a crowd that sold out all of their seats. In the 450 class, Ryan Dungey dominated from the start, all the way to the end. With an over 10-second lead, no one had a chance for the top spot on the podium. Justin Barcia grabbed another win for the final East Coast Lites main event, while Eli Tomac grabbed the win for the West Coast class. When it came time for the East VS. West Coast Shootout, all eyes were on the champions, and Barcia and Tomac went one and two, respectively.
EASTERN REGIONAL SUPERCROSS LITES The beginning of the night started with the East Coast Lites Main Event. When the gates dropped for the 15-lap main, Geico Honda’s Justin Barcia came out swinging, and led the entire pack of riders through Monster Alley, and into the stadium. Close behind was Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett. Barcia’s teammate, Jusin Bogle, had slid out into the first corner with Les Smith and both were put all the way back in the pack. Much like what Bam Bam had done all season long, he started to quickly put together some smooth lines, and the Honda rider started to pull away from Roczen. After the first three laps, the running order was Barcia, Roczen, Baggett, Malcolm Stewart, and Kyle Peters. However, it was too long after, Peters fell back in the pack, and Rockstar Suzuki’s Blake Wharton moved into fifth.
Halfway through the race, Barcia had made a mistake coming out of a corner before the triple, which forced him to double. Consequently, Roczen had tremendously closed up the gap. After 10 laps, though, there was some serious lapped traffic that the top five riders had encountered, and that let Barcia extend his lead again. When the race came to a close, Barcia had taken the win, followed by Roczen, and Baggett.
